History Group

The third Wednesday of the month (until 20/11/2019) at 7:30PM to 9:30PM

The group was formed to bring people together to build a comprehensive history of the village and surrounding area. History does not have geographical boundaries and so we welcome people from outside the village to provide as much information as possible.

A number of our members are researching various topics, or just coming along to learn about the village. Tibenham Airfield is very close and has a fantastic history, and is a subject of great interest to many people worldwide as a result of the American servicemen based here during the Second World Bar. The name Tibenham is mentioned in the Domesday book, All Saints Church dates back to Saxon times and the village was much larger than it is now at the turn of the 19th Century, with over 760 people resident.

We have Census Information from 1841 - 1911 (the last census released), and have digitised the Church records dating from 1656, with over 6,000 records.

We have lots of other more random information on some families and buildings, but there is still much to do. We are currently working on a series of leaflets on Tibenham's History and People, and contributions from anyone interested are welcome.

Having taken a break during the pandemic, we are hoping to restart the group in 2022. There is a £2.50 charge per person for the hall and refreshments.
